Shanxi, circa 1850
These rustic, simply styled benches are quite typical of seating used throughout China. Easily portable, they were used both indoors and outside, often seen outside shops and restaurants. This pair is in elm wood, with traces of the original darker finish still visible underneath the thick seats. The rounded legs are splayed in an A-frame style, supported with double stretchers, and fitted with simple spandrels and apron where they fit into the seat. Great for seating at a kitchen table, as extra side tables or under a window piled up with cushions. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for the two benches.
